Tim has become very vocal in the last week. He talks to himself, the walls, us, and his feet. We often have profound conversations that leave me eager for more.

My parents were just here for a five day visit, and Timothy put on a major milestone show for them. He can now hold his head up for extended periods, focus and follow people as they walk around the room, stay awake longer and play in a very basic hand-and-foot-waving manner, and he SMILES real smiles. Mom and Dad’s attention surely brought it on, and I look forward to his progress under Jenny and Neville’s loving care. It was wonderful to watch Mom and Dad with him. I changed very few diapers during their visit, and only held him when he needed to be fed. They even did some baby sitting and let us go to a movie one evening and dinner another.

five weeks old tomorrow

For the first four weeks, Tim has been fascinated with the overhead light, the Venetian blinds, and the wall. Cheap toys, eh? This week, his eyes have gained a sharper focus, and he’s starting to take in the world around him a bit more. He woke up on a recent walk and actually looked around instead of closing his eyes and going back to sleep. He stays awake during the day for longer periods. Yesterday, he noticed the toys on his bouncy chair for the first time even though they’ve been dangling in front of his face for almost two weeks.

Tim loves his bath. He doesn’t like getting undressed for the bath, and he makes an awful noise when we take him out of the water, but the few minutes when he’s free to kick and float are some of the best few minutes of his day. He doesn’t even mind when he gets water in his eyes.

We had to have an emergency bath tonight as Tim overfilled his nappy with a very wet poo. It filled up his onsey (vest) as well, and leaked onto Paul’s clothes. I managed to remain uncontaminated. We didn’t comb his hair immediately after the bath and discovered that it has a little bit of curl in it.

My colleagues bought Tim enough books to fill a shelf. Right now, his favorite is this black, yellow, and white one. It may not be Dostoevsky, but it’s a start. Some of you have asked what color his hair is. When it’s matted down to his head like it is here, it look light brown with strawberry blond tones. When it’s combed and off his head, it’s blond. His eyes are still newborn blue/grey, but they seem to be lightening towards Paul’s eye color rather than turning brown like mine. The pillow he’s in doubles for him to sit propped up and goes around my waist when nursing to help support his weight.

Tim’s Aunt Melissa sent him two cuddly animals that he likes to ‘chat’ with while he’s getting his nappy changed. Instead of learning dog and cat like most kids, Tim’s first animal names may be elephant and giraffe. The giraffe got a rude surprise the other morning when Tim decided to wee when his nappy came off. When Tim’s a little older, we’ll move the animals from the changing table to his play area so that Tim and Dad can play safari.
